Turning Vision into Reality

This weekend, we enjoyed an autumnal gathering in a beautiful, rustic setting alongside a pond, only a few minutes from our home.

The property owner, our friend’s father, shared the vision he had when he purchased this land. At the time, the land was derelict and overgrown. At the time, the neighbors built a fence and put up shrubs so they didn’t have to see the ramshackle cabin.

Over the next few years, he refreshed the cabin and cleaned up the land. The neighbors took down their fence. He spends every morning here drinking coffee and enjoying solitude before his work day. He and his wife have plans to build their retirement home on the property.

He said over and over again: “I wanted this to be a place where people come to make memories.”

As we watched the kids paint their pumpkins, smash a pinata, eat way too much candy, and enjoy the outdoors in the rain and without a screen in sight, we could see his vision in action.

Jana and I often reflect on our vision for ourselves, our life together, our careers, and what we want for the future.

We’re teaching our kids to set goals and to appreciate the feeling of achieving that goal. Brooks (4) wants to take his training wheels off, so he knows he needs to put the work in and practice. Hudson (14 months) is … well … interested in whatever Brooks is doing.
