Rethinking our Morning Routine
Our mornings are ROUGH!
Whether the boys (ages 4 and 15 months) are hungry, tired, unhappy with their outfit, don’t feel well, need attention, don’t want a diaper change, or just want to be held, the daily cacophony of whining and fussing starts around 6:45am.
Many people are in this boat – and not only those with young kids. We have friends with teenagers who won’t get out of bed or pets who won’t walk in the snow. This also goes for grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and others who help with morning routines!
Jana and I are morning people by nature – I love an early morning workout and taking a peaceful moment or two to enjoy my coffee. These moments are short-lived; it’s hard to remember what it was like to get up for a work day and only think about ourselves.
By the time we start our workday, many of us feel like we’ve finished a marathon at sprint pace. If you’ve owned the morning and everything went as planned, it feels like a PR. For us lately, we’ve been bringing up the rear!
Last week, when we couldn’t hear each other because the screaming was so loud, we stacked hands and decided to find our leverage points (from Reset, by Dan Heath).
I went to bed earlier, we took care of chores and making lunch the night before, and we decided that tidying up and folding laundry moved down on the priority ladder.
So far…a little better!
Be willing to shift gears and own your mindset. Small changes can yield big results
